Secondary Research : Music genres

Research
A large amount of my research has been taken from BPI ( British Phonographic Industry) website. This website is representation of the music industry it works like a trade board to over 300 record labels including large mainstream labels like Sony records and Universal records. All of the Information is from the report done in 2013.

This chart  shows that the main influence in music nowadays is the younger audience who buy less Physical formats as you can see in the chart shown above in 2009 the typical format to buy was Physical formats now in the most recent year it has lost people to Online downloads.

The Chart above shows the most sold genres of music this recent year like most before it is the majority of rock music. This may be because its an umbrella term for many varieties of rock the most popular being pop rock and this is why its our chosen genre.

After I found what I could find from this company I moved on to statista an another website that gathers US statistics. This chart that I found show the sales of particular genres in the US. As you can see the top selling genre throughout the ages has remained as alternative music this genre is a wide umbrella and covers everything from rock to metal music but overall shows that rock at the moment is the best genre to choose.

Also from the website statista I found this chart which breaks down the sales more evenly across the genres again this chart goes to prove that the rock genre specifcally classic rock is the best selling this is why we are thinking of doing a pop rock band that has many vintage touches.

To see what is selling today I have completed this by looking at various charts the first being from the official charts and a second from a conneted side website ( sorry I have lost the original address ) As you will see in the two charts there are rock influences in both the number ones. The first chart is the one from the official chart company :

The top one at this moment was blame by Calvin Harris this feature the popular singer John Newman who stands for the vintage values that we want to influence our band with. Sam Smith also has these same influences we wish to connect with. The next chart I have chosen show the specific rock chart :

The most recent and current at the moment is shown here as 5 seconds of summer these are very popular at the moment and are setting the recipe that we want to follow with our band. They are in the same genre although they do play slightly different music.

Audience Profile of Kerrang Magazine

I have chosen to analyse the audience of Kerrang magazine not only because I am familair with the audience but also because the band we have made could be marketed through this magazine.

Age : 18-30s - This magazine is aimed at young rock fans that often want to be in an band and can often got to gigs this is the typical young magazine and only has a younger appeal then over 50s due to the rock bands it covers like All Time Low if this was aimed at older people would be bands like AC/DC.

From the magazine statistics website http://magazines.bauermediaadvertising.com/magazines/detail/kerrang. I have learnt that 56.1% of the readership is in the age bracket of 15-24. This younger bracket is the largest section of the audience.

Gender: Gender neutral- This is a specialist magazine and I think because the specialism being in rock it means that it s trying to appeal to both genders this is also shown in the common theme of Black/ White and red.

From the magazine statistics ( Link seen above )  that I have gathered the magazine sells most to the male audience although this is not by much as 45.3% of the readership are female this makes it a fairly even split between the two making the magazine neutral to both genders.

Social Economics group : I think because the readers are most likely to be young they are typically in the D or E social grouping this means they are earning low pay and this magazine is a specialty buy because of its price.

Physco graphics:

Personality : The typical reader would have a darker personality this is because it is aimed at an alternative audience. They would have a dark sense of humour this is mostly shown through the many comic strips and dry jokes that feature in the magazine itself. They would stereotypically be part of the gothic or rock culture that is developed and because its a teen audience they would be going through what is known as the typical dark phrase.

Values :  There are not many connections to values through the magazine although they do feature alot of article on charity events and many other feature on good will stories this suggests that they have good morals although this is not typically what you would think.

Attitudes : The attitude that is connected with many rock media products is that they don't care , that they are a bit angry and punk like. This suggests that they like to get behind something and stick to it this is often wrote into the articles where they ask for support from the audience.

Interests : The magazine is a specifically rock magazine so most readers religiously follow music and gigs I think it would to be hard to read this magazine if you didnt. I think this audience will see themselfs as knowlegable on music and specifically the rock genre.

Lifestyle : Most of these readers attend many gigs shown by the multiple gig reviews and gig posters in the magazine. This may mean they are a little bit younger and have money to spend and do not have to pay bills and other expenses.

Overall, I think that the reader will most likely be part of the gothic or rock culture this means they follow music relgiously and attend many gigs and other music supported events. This magazine is a specialty magazine that means that It has been aimed at one particular group of people so they would typical like music and rock music specifically.

Geo demographics : England - All the gigs and ads featured in this magazine are based mainly in England and a lot tend to be in the south. To suit their audience they have made sure to feature smaller local band and the large idols as well as there many gig reviews are of gigs that are happening in England.

Ethnicity : British  -This is again because of the location of the content in the magazine the general people that read this magazine will also live in these areas and will most likely be british. Although I think this it may not be the case as it has not been directly aimed at eaither specifically so there may be a gay audience.

Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual - I think that majority of its readers would be straight this is because the content tend to be about crushing on certain band members like the male lead singers or the female vocalists.Although I think this it may not be the case as it has not been directly aimed at eaither specifically so there may be a gay audience.

Consumptions history : I think that people that read this magazine will read other rock based magazine such as Rocksound and the many others on the market. They would have also listened to rock music for a long time and may idolise bands like Black Veil Brides and All Time Low but who also likes classic rock from bands like The Rolling Stones and AC/DC.

Cross-cultural consumer characteristics : I think because the target audience of this band are young teenagers I think the will mainly be mainstreamers this means that they are simply buying the product because of stability.I think that this magazine provides this due the audience wanting to buy a popular music magazine and kerrang is one of the biggest out there.

Introducing PRIM

Name: Prim

We chose Prim because of the line 'Prim & proper' which we feel matches our bands concept and style, hopefully contradicting the genre of music the band will play.

Number of members: 4 (Singer, Guitar, Bass & Drummer)

We choose 4 after iconic bands such The Beatles and All Time Low. This is also typical of a pop rock band. The lead singer will be female whilst the three male, we are hoping that this will make our band stand out in a limited market where male lead singers have dominated.

Music they will play and what it's about:

Pop rock

The bands music will have a message, each album will a concept for example, Green Day's album American Idiots and MCR's album The Black Parade. We have chosen this because these are often best selling albums in a popular market, it hooks young people, creating memories around the band and giving them a snapshot of their youth.

The look:

They will be suited to fit their name Prim (and proper) but with an underlining of mischief, for example how you would see someone looking in a suit after coming out of a club. We are hoping to take inspiration from Teddy Boys from the 80's (and 50's).
